Job Opportunity: The Atkinson

Sefton Council is seeking an experienced and qualified curator to work with us and the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead to create an exhibition entitled Great British Watercolours. The exhibition will focus on the best watercolours in both collections and will be held at The Atkinson from September until November 2016 then at the Williamson Art Gallery, date for this exhibition to be confirmed.

The exhibition is part of a three year project entitled Rediscovering Our Collections. The project has been funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and is about rediscovering what is in our prints and drawings collections in order to establish what we can do with them to increase access and engagement and open up fundraising opportunities. It is vital for us to understand, use and work with these collections that have been underused and neglected for many years.

For the first time The Atkinson brings together Sefton’s collections into one venue, provides state of the art exhibition, display and storage facilities and has the professional museum expertise to deliver collections management and engagement at the highest level. The Williamson Art Gallery is a purpose built art gallery that opened in December 1928. It was the first purpose built museum and art gallery in Birkenhead and houses the vast majority of Birkenhead’s colletion of artistic and historic works in a series of varied and well proportioned galleries.

The curator will research the collections at both venues and will curate an exhibition that focuses on key watercolours at both galleries from Turner through to Sargent. The curator will select key works and carry out research on them, plan the exhibition layouts for both venues and write all exhibition text. They will also contribute to ideas for participatory workshops linked to the exhibition, working with The Atkinson’s Lifelong Learning Officer.

The curator will be required to work closely with staff at both venues in order to gain access to the collections and artist files to plan the exhibition ensuring that a high quality exhibition suitable for both venues is created.

The curator will need to have experience of the design, development and delivery of exhibitions with a gallery or museum. It is essential that the curator has excellent project management skills, research skills, personal organisation and communication skills as well as proven past experience of providing high quality exhibitions that appeal to a wide range of audiences.
