Museums Association Update – September 2016

Museums Taskforce

The first meeting took place at the end of August and the TOR and timeline has been agreed. The remit of the Taskforce is to look at the challenges and opportunities for museums not in receipt of national funding in all four nations of the UK. There is a blog here and there will be an opportunity for members to feed in ideas in the autumn.

Museums Survey

The MA is partnering with Museums Development teams this year to deliver a new and improved version of what was previously known as the Cuts Survey. The survey will feed into the work of the Museums Taskforce as well as providing data for an annual ‘state of the nations’ report on museums, so it’s really important. The survey will go up on the MA website at the end of the month. Please make sure that your museum completes the survey as the more responses the more accurate the overall picture will be.

Salary Survey

The MA has won some funding from ACE to conduct the first full salary survey of the sector since 2004. They are currently recruiting a specialist researcher to carry out the survey, and we’re interested to hear feedback from you on what the sector needs in terms of salary guidelines, so do get in touch with me or directly with Alistair Brown to discuss.

The MA’s Transformers mid-career scheme will open for applications in the autumn and there are places available in each of the four nations. The previous programmes have been very successful, participants have overwhelmingly reported hugely enjoying the course and this is a very valuable opportunity for people working in all sorts of roles in museums.

A reminder that the annual conference will be held in Glasgow on 7th and 8th November. The event is booking fast. For booking details see the MA wbsite.

Museums Review and Exhibition Tax Credit Consultations

The Museums Review (England) and Tax Credit (whole UK) consultations have just been launched. The MA will be providing responses to both, and are keen to hear feedback and examples of good practice for both.
