Port Sunlight Village Trust is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Port Sunlight Conservation Area. The village is the finest surviving example of early urban planning in the UK. It is one of the Liverpool City Region’s premier visitor attractions and home to over 2,000 residents.
An independent charity established in 1999, the Trust maintains all of the parks, gardens, and monuments and memorials in the village. We own one-third of the housing stock – some 300 properties – and eight of the public buildings from which we derive our primary source of income. We also operate the award-winning Arts Council Accredited Port Sunlight Museum through which we engage local schools, domestic and international visitors, and the local community.
We are seeking to recruit a Community Engagement Officer on a 12 month contract for an Arts Council England Museum Resilience Fund project ‘The role of the museum in the resilience of Port Sunlight’. . This is a brand new post and one that will contribute towards the Trust’s future strategic direction.
Our project aims to develop a new relationship between local residents and the Trust, by involving residents in the development of our new strategic plan, and facilitating projects, events and activities which will enhance village life. Much of your work will be based at Bridge Cottage, a property in the village which was formerly the home of William Hesketh Lever and will be transformed into a multi-purpose community hub and event space.
You will be responsible for developing resident involvement in our ACE funded project, including:
- Being involved in the fit-out and furnishing of Bridge Cottage
- Recruiting, training and managing volunteers
- Developing an activity and events programme which enhances village life and supports health and wellbeing
- Networking with local stakeholders and partners to promote the Trust and the project.
The post holder will support the work of the Heritage team and contribute to the development of PSVT’s new strategic plan. You will engage with a wide range of people from volunteers and tour guides to visitors and the media, and you will work across all departments at the Trust. Experience of working in community development and volunteering is essential, and a demonstrable interest in heritage would be a strong advantage. You will need to demonstrate a keen interest in Port Sunlight, excellent communication skills, and a people focused approach. We are looking for a self-starter who wants to make a difference and relishes a challenge.
