The theme of this year’s conference is Memory and transformation, with panels exploring themes ranging from memory institutions and material narratives to digital memories and public reminiscence. The conference includes practical workshops and exciting networking opportunities. This year’s conference meal will be in the stunning surroundings of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
DCDC brings together colleagues from across the archive, library, museum and academic sectors to explore shared opportunities, collective challenges, and to discuss how each sector can work more effectively with one another.

CALL FOR PARTNERS: New Partnership Touring Exhibition
We are looking for partners to host a new partnership touring print exhibition, The eye of a collector, which will highlight 25-30 works from a recent bequest of over 200 prints and drawings from the influential film critic Alexander Walker (1930-2003). The exhibition will focus specifically on works of art that mark a transitional moment in an artist’s career. Walker recognized that a change in direction or a breakthrough in style could often be seen in an artist’s graphic work and he purposefully collected prints and drawings that demonstrated this. BOOKING NOW OPEN: National Programmes Conference 2018
Booking is now open for the British Museum’s 2018 National Programmes Conference, Museums and digital memory: from creation and curation to digital preservation. Taking place at the BM on 3 September 2018, the conference will focus on the theme of ‘digital’ with an emphasis on preservation. The day will explore both the exciting outward-facing side of digital technology in museums, and the back-of-house side that can often get overlooked – if we’re memory institutions, how are we ensuring that we retain all the digital memory that we’re creating? Tickets are free, but must be reserved online via Eventbrite. A limited number of travel bursaries are also available for delegates for whom travel costs would be prohibitive.

This year’s Social History Curators Group conference includes interactive workshops, tours and presentations on a wide range of themes including interpretation and community engagement. Museum Development North West are pleased to announce that there is a bursary available for this year’s AIM Conference at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon on 21st– 23rd June. The theme for this year is Changing Gear. Museum Development North West recognises that it is important for museum professionals to connect with colleagues through conferences and networking events, but also how stretched budgets can be when it comes to professional development. Registration is open for the Creative Fuse NE Conference, taking place at Discovery Museum in Newcastle.
This is a key event, enabling the region to reflect on the Creative Fuse journey, share knowledge, be inspired, explore ideas, discuss cross sector collaboration and innovation and the value and future of academic, creative and digital fusion for the creative economy and ecology in the region.

The University Museums Group’s 2018 conference will explore how university museums can contribute to, and even lead, universities’ efforts to engage internationally. It will consider how smaller as well as larger museums can participate in, and benefit from, international programmes. Panels will offer presentations from sponsoring bodies and case studies from museum staff, ranging over practical experience and future opportunities.

This seminar will bring together specialists from a variety of disciplines, including musical instruments and social history, seeking to broaden perspectives, develop new ways of thinking about the presentation of musical instruments and explore how they can be active performers in a wide range of display contexts – whether or not they are able to be played.

Sensing Culture is a Heritage Lottery Fund funded project working with blind and partially sighted people to open up heritage at museums, landmarks, archives and collections.
The project will conclude on Tuesday 1st May 2018 at the Sensing Culture Conference. The free Conference is an opportunity for those interested in making museums and heritage sites more accessible for blind and partially sighted people to find out the successes, challenges and learnings from the project. It will:
- Bring together like-minded people who share the same goal of making museums, heritage sites, and the heritage sector more accessible
- Showcase good practice from across the museum/heritage sector, including the Sensing Culture project
- Get you thinking about what you can do
- Highlight future opportunities
There will be a wide range of talks and workshops from people involved in the Sensing Culture project. The keynote speakers for the day are Liz Ellis & Caroline George (Heritage Lottery Fund) and Simon Hayhoe (University of Bath), with more speakers to be announced.
It will also be the first chance to preview the new Sensing Culture website, which will be a one stop shop for information and guidance on making museums, heritage sites, and the heritage sector more accessible following the completion of this project.
Sensing Culture has been led by the Royal National Institute of the Blind and delivered with the support of several prestigious heritage organisations, including a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The partners of Sensing Culture are:
- Oxford University Museums and Collections led by Oxford Museum of Natural History
- The Canterbury Cluster (Beaney House of Art and Knowledge, Canterbury Library and Canterbury Cathedral)
- Lewes Castle in Sussex, part of the Sussex Archaeological Society
- Arthur Conan Doyle Collection, Richard Lancelyn Green Bequest in Portsmouth, part of Portsmouth Council and Libraries
Sensing Culture aims to increase the independence of blind and partially sighted visitors, professionals, artists, and volunteers by training staff and volunteers at the partner heritage sites and implementing practical solutions. In support of this, interaction at these sites has been increased and meaningful learning experiences created by using technology, audio description and tactile panels.
