From the Crime and Punishment Collections Network (CaP):
Come and Join Us!
CaP is an Arts Council England Subject Specialist Network. Our aim is to provide support to historic collections relating to crime and punishment–whether prisons, police or courts–through the creation of a network of like-minded members. Our members include universities, archives, libraries, heritage centres, museums and historic sites, in addition to staff from the prison, court and police services. We represent, promote and assist museums, libraries, archives and heritage sites which either hold collections or manage sites related to the topic of criminal justice.
With the launch of our new website resource, this is an exciting time to become a committee member. Following on from the Re-thinking CaP project, we have been working really hard to reinvigorate the group; re-writing our constitution, streamlining our membership application process, creating the website and developing new resources to share. As such, we are currently seeking new committee members to share a variety of responsibilities related to the running of the CaP.
We are looking for a minimum commitment of one year. The majority of our business is conducted by email but there are roughly two committee meetings per year and one AGM (one committee meeting may be held the same day as the AGM). Our meetings are usually held in Birmingham.
Becoming part of CaP would be an ideal opportunity for someone at the beginning of their PhD / career looking to make new connections or seek professional development, so if you are enthusiastic, organised, professional, a good team player and could commit to a minimum of a year then we would love to hear from you.
We are all volunteers and cannot offer a wage to any of our team members.

The North West Volunteer Managers Network is an opportunity for any museum volunteer managers to come together, network and learn new skills. The next meeting will be led by Jack Puller from the Volunteer Centre Manchester and focus on trends in volunteering.

The Disability Co-operative Network (D.C.N.) are developing an informal virtual group of Neurodiverse Museum Professionals (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, AD(H)D, ASD, Tourette’s) who work (both paid and unpaid) or are emerging professionals in the Heritage and Cultural Sectors.
There will be two groups, one based in U.K. and Europe and its sister group in the United States led by Sam Theriault.
It will be peer supported and led with opportunities to share strategies, develop friendships and influence working practice.
We can also provide opportunities to feedback Access to Work experiences to D.A.N. (Dyslexia Adult Network) and AchieveAbility to improve service in light of the Westminster AchieveAbility Commission Report: Neurodiverse Voices: Opening Doors to Employment and Making A Shift Report by Arts Council England.
We would like the group to work in creating opportunities to improve existing working practices within the Heritage Sector and good for career development in inclusive practice.

Culture Now is a new national network founded with the purpose of supporting mid-career heritage professionals who wish to challenge established thinking and make a change.
Launching in November 2017, Culture Now’s ambition is to create a national network which supports those new to the sector through to mid-level professionals. It is a platform to exchange ideas and develop strong professional connections across the country, whether remotely or in person.
Founded by heritage professionals that recognise the limited opportunities to influence change and comment on the issues that affect us all, Culture Now with funding from Museum Development in the North West and East Midlands want to work collaboratively across the cultural sector to provide a platform to represent, articulate and promote the views and ideas of early to mid-level professionals while supporting and sharing professional development and networking.
Culture Now is looking to grow its professional network and to hear the ideas of people that would like to be involved with the group. The session is also an opportunity to hear from ARUP and us about our new U-Values publication.

The Museums Association (MA) has created an informal network for museums with plans to commemorate the anniversaries of several gender equality milestones in 2018, including the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, which saw voting rights granted to women for the first time.
The 1918 act enfranchised women over 30 who met certain property ownership requirements, and extended the vote to almost all men over the age of 21. It laid the path for the introduction of universal suffrage ten years later, which saw women win equal voting rights to men.
2018 will also mark the 50th anniversary of the women’s strike at Ford Dagenham, which led to the eventual introduction of the Equal Pay Act in 1970, and the 130th anniversary of the matchwomen’s strike, which saw women take collective action against hazardous working conditions and poor pay.
Due to the level of interest among museums in celebrating these anniversaries, the MA’s director Sharon Heal has decided to establish the network to enable institutions to come together and share knowledge, information and ideas.
A number of museums are planning events for 2018, including the East End Women’s Museum in London, which is in the planning stages and will open to coincide with the anniversaries in 2018, the People’s History Museum in Manchester, and St Fagan’s Museum of National History in Wales.
The Royal Holloway, University of London, plans to launch a three-year citizen’s project in January 2017 to work with museums, archives and historical societies to identify, map and curate local stories about the struggle for women’s suffrage.

Working alongside the national Football Museum and Staircase House we’re pleased to be running our first session for a new North West Volunteer Managers Network. The morning will be an opportunity for volunteer managers from around the region to network and hear case studies and from volunteers at the National Football Museum.
The afternoon will then be a workshop lead by rob Jackson and will focus on how to develop as a volunteer manager: What do you want from a career in working with volunteers? Do you even see volunteer management as a career or just a step towards something else? How can you take control of your professional development? Drawing on his own personal career journey, Rob will help you focus on how you can develop as volunteer manager and what options are available to you to make your goals happen.
