In partnership with Durham University, Arts Council England (ACE) have launched a commission looking into creativity in schools and they want to hear from a diverse range of organisations and people to help inform their report. Register your interest here and they’ll send you a questionnaire.
Corporate Plan for 2018-20
As they enter the final two years of their current ten-year strategy, Great art and culture for everyone, ACE have published their new Corporate Plan for 2018-20. The plan sets out how they’ll continue to deliver their strategy until 2020, across all areas and disciplines.

Museum & Gallery Exhibitions Tax Relief
The Museum & Gallery Exhibitions Tax Relief is the eighth in a series of creative reliefs introduced by government. It is designed to support organisations to create, and tour public facing exhibitions by helping them to recover some of their production costs.

That’s why for the next 12 weeks (until 11 April) we’re working with insight and strategy specialists BritainThinks to have an open conversation with anyone that has a stake in or an opinion on the future of arts and culture in England. In March 2018, ACE will be hosting a series of briefing events across England to support museums and galleries to understand and benefit from the Museum and Gallery Exhibitions Tax Relief.
ACE anticipate a high demand for these events and so will be restricting attendance to one person per organisation.
To maximise the benefit of these events, it is strongly recommend that the person responsible for financial management at your organisation should attend.
Briefings taking place in the North are:

Arts Council England have commissioned two new independent reports which highlight significant economic growth in arts and culture.
This report is an update of the Centre for Economics and Business Research’s (Cebr) 2015 study, on behalf of Arts Council England, on the contribution made by the arts and culture industry to the UK’s national and regional economies.
The report includes new figures that show;
- New figures show the arts and culture industry has grown 10% in a year, and now contributes £8.5bn to the UK economy. More than double that of the Premier League.
- There were £5.2bn exports of arts and culture goods and services in 2013, more than 3 times that of UK film sector. With 84% going outside the EU.
- Culture pays £2.6bn in taxes, £5 for every £1 of public funding.

Arts Council England would love to speak to your audiences
Arts Council England are currently conducting a research study looking into live-to-digital content generation and consumption.
To help with part of this research, they are looking for a number of arts and cultural organisations help them get 5 minute online survey out to a diverse, arts-engaged audience across a range of art forms – and they are particularly interested in hearing from people who are interested in museums – so we said we’d try to help by encouraging some of our members/contacts to share the survey. They want to get responses from everyone, from those who engage with digital arts day-to-day to those who’ve never come across anything of the sort – so every response is really valuable.
This could be via a number of means, for example, sharing a link to the survey on your social media page, including it in a scheduled newsletter, or by a direct mail to your contacts. If you’re keen to help, then it would be very much appreciated! Some additional information is below.
What is the survey about?
The survey aims to explore live-to-digital across a range of art forms, to assess the impact it is having, and to understand future potential. It will include questions for participants around:
- Who they are, how often they consume live-to-digital (if at all), and for which art forms
- Opinions of live-to-digital and how it compares with the ‘real world’ experience (if applicable)
- Motivations and barriers to engaging with live-to-digital content
- What types of live-to-digital content they would be interested in engaging with in future
The survey has 13 questions, and there will be a prize draw for those taking part, with the opportunity to win an iPad mini or one of 5 runner-up prizes of £20 in M&S vouchers.
How can you help?
You can help by getting the survey link out to your audience any way you like – for example, by doing one or more of the following:
- Posting the survey link to your social media channels
- Putting a link to the survey onto your website
- Incorporating the survey link into part of a regular newsletter you send out
- Sending the survey link to your mailing list as a one-off mail
What will happen to the information collected?
The information will be collected and stored by a research agency called MTM, in accordance with the Market Research Society (MRS) Code of Conduct – data will be analysed in aggregate only and respondents will remain anonymous.
The data gathered will feed into a wider report on live-to-digital, to be published via Arts Council England’s website later in 2017. It will build on the previous research study which looked at live-to-digital in the context of theatre (available here), and aims to be a valuable resource for the whole of the arts and culture sector.

Applications Now Open
Applications are now open for the Museums and Resilient Leadership Programme (MRL) – a unique year-long development course fully funded by Arts Council England.
Described as ‘life changing’, it is designed to help you become a cultural leader for the 21st Century, resilient and entrepreneurial.

The Programme draws on a wealth of knowledge and insight about leadership in the cultural and commercial sectors. It puts this learning at your disposal in inspirational settings.

Arts Council England is leading the Accreditation Review on behalf of partners in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and has recently published some frequently asked questions all about the Museum Accreditation Scheme review. The Arts Council would like to hear from as many people as possible working with young children up to the age of 6 in England.
This consultation sets out a series of options for supporting arts and creative practice in early years settings. We would really like to hear your views on what will be a significant opportunity for the early years sector.

Arts Council England has commissioned DC Research to carry out a Scoping Study entitled ‘Mapping of Museum Data in England’. The study aims to increase Arts Council England’s understanding of the current data collection practice in the museum sector. It includes mapping existing data collection, as well as identifying issues and making recommendations for future data collection.
As part of the scoping study, a survey of museums across England is being carried out to ensure that the perspectives of individual museums and museums services form an important part of the consultation process. This survey provides you with the opportunity to contribute your views on these issues, and help inform and influence future data collection arrangements.
The survey is available here and the deadline for submitting survey responses is Wednesday 23rd August 2017.

We’ve just published new guidance for our Catalyst small grants programme. The funding page is here where the applicant guidance can be downloaded.
The £3 million programme aims to build fundraising capacity and encourage more private giving to arts and culture. Organisations will be able to apply for a one off small grant from between £10,000 and £30,000.
Museums and libraries can now apply for funding. This reflects the changes we have made to our wider investment approach: for the first time, arts organisations, museums, and libraries are able to apply for National Portfolio investment, Grants for Arts and Culture and our strategic funds. Integrating funding will stimulate greater collaboration between arts organisations, museums and libraries, and build on the existing links between them. This is a positive development for practitioners, audiences and communities, and we are already seeing the benefits of this at a local level, where museums, libraries and arts organisations collaborate on creative and cultural projects. We believe that this approach will help us achieve our strategic goals by identifying and funding work of the highest quality, representing the best public value, whether created in a museum, an arts organisation or a library.
